3/16/2019 Unserviceable Flag Ceremony March 16th at Huntington Beach

Our post has gathered many torn and tattered flags from Irvine residents over the past year. At our March post meeting, we separated the cotton and nylon flags to prepare for the ceremony. Nylon flags will be recycled with another non-profit and cotton flags will be ceremoniously retired.

The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags is outlined in Resolution No. 440, passed by the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York, Sept. 20-23, 1937. The ceremony has been an integral part of American Legion ritual since that date. Click the link for the full resolution https://www.legion.org/flag/ceremony
